On a warm day in May, a group of volunteers gathered to clean up the traffic islands in West Newton. We began with the fountain island on Chestnut Street, headed to the small island on Barnstable, and then over to the island on Sylvan.

Fourteen of us tackled the three islands on Forest Avenue and after five days of work, it became clear that nothing would grow in the gravelly, undernourished soil. We needed professional help. So the Newton Garden Buds was born. We are now an incorporated organization dedicated to maintaining the islands. Our first priority is to raise money to amend the soil on the Forest Street islands, design three sustainable gardens, and prepare for a spring planting.
